Loading the AIAA Wright Flyer for her trip North!

The date is April 20, 1998. It's Monday - the day the Wright Flyer Team departs for the NASA Ames Research Center, Moffet Field in Palo Alto. The scheduled departure time is 8:00 am. Most of our members live in the South Bay/Palos Verdes area, so we met and carpooled to Yorba Linda in the new Chevrolet 15 passenger van, provided through Martin Chevrolet in Torrance, CA, for the round trip. We now are heading for Yorba Linda to meet up with our airplane which was loaded on the DeVries and American Red Ball Trucks over the weekend. The 104 foot banner is in place on the American Red Ball truck, which holds the canard and rudder of the airplane, as well as most of our tools and educational handouts. The DeVries truck holds the main wing box, and will be opened up at each of our stops to let people view the main part of the plane with Orville at the controls.

Our plan is to stay together and caravan up to our multiple stops on the way to NASA. Two-way radios were brought along to keep in touch with each vehicle (2 trucks, the team van and one member van), should a problem arise on the road.

There are nine team members making the full trip, plus one who will go part way and return in their own vehicle, and several people who will meet us along the way or at NASA. (We later realized that the team's plan to caravan together was a good decision, as we all arrived at each destination on time.
